Ruqyah for the Cure of Black Magic and Jinn Possession

Ruqyah for Magic

According to Ibn Qudama AI-Maqdisi, magic is a set of knots, incantations, and words uttered or written, or carried out in such a way as to affect the body of the person, his heart or mind, without even coming into contact with him/her.

The reality of magic is that there are some types that can kill, cause one to fall ill, or act as an obstacle against a man having sexual intercourse with his wife.

Other types can separate spouses, and can make them hate or love each other.[1] Ibn Al-Qayyim adds, “Magic is an agreement set up between a magician and a Satan, which stipulates that the magician commits certain illegal or polytheistic acts, in return for the Satan’s assistance and obedience in fulfilling the magician’s request.”[2]

Actions of the magicians to get the support of Satan:

  • Some magicians use the Quran as footwear to go to the toilet.
  • Some write some Quranic verses with filth.
  • Some write them using menses discharge.
  • Some write them under their fit.
  • Some anagrammatize (writing in reverse) the Opening Chapter (Al-Fatihah) of the Quran.
  • Some perform prayer without wudu (ablution).
  • Some remain in a state of major ritual impurity.
  • Some sacrifice animals to Satan, without initiating the slaughter with the words: In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Beneficent (Bismillah ar-rahmani ar-rahim), and place the carcass at a location specified by the Satan.
  • Some of them speak to planets and prostrate to them, instead of prostrating to Allah.
  • Some of them commit incest (with their mothers or daughters).
  • Some write incantations in a non-Arabic language, carrying overtones of disbelief.

From this standpoint, it is clear that a Jinni does not assist the magician without something in return, and the greater the magician’s disbelief is, the more obedient the Satan is to him and the faster in executing his orders. However, if the magician abstains from committing acts of disbelief, as instructed by Satan, the latter will stop executing the magician’s orders.

Magic in light of Quran and Sunnah

Almighty Allah says,

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon, who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew. (Al-Baqarah 2:102)

Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak. From the evil of that which He created. And from the evil of darkness when it settles. And from the evil of the blowers in knots. And from the evil of an envier when he envies.” (Al-Falaq 113:1-5)

In the Sunnah:

Abu Hurairah narrated, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Avoid the seven great destructive sins.” They (the people!) asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What are they?” He said, “To join partners in worship with Allah; to practice sorcery; to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law); to eat up usury (Riba), to eat up the property of an orphan; to give one’s back to the enemy and fleeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting and to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

This hadith illustrates for us that magic is one of the severest major sins in Islam and thus it is completely prohibited.

The Ruqyah for Magic

The incantator should put his hand on the head of the bewitched person, starts by making Istiadhah (seeking refuge with Allah against Satan) and recite the following:

First: Al-Fatiha (the opening chapter of the Quran)

Bismi Allahi Arrahmani Ar-Rahim * Alhamdu lillahi rabbi Al-“lamin * Ar-Rahmani Ar-Rahim * Maliki yawmi addin * Iyyaka na`budu waiyyaka nasta`in * Ihdina assirata almustaqim * Sirata alladhina an`amta `alayhim ghayri almaghdubi `alayhim wala addallin.

In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [All] praise is [due] to Allah , Lord of the worlds. The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. (Al-Fatiha 1:1-7)

Second

Alif, Lam, Mim. * Dhalika alkitabu larayba fihi hudan lilmuttaqin * Alladhina yu’minuna bilghaybi wa yuqimuna assalata wamimma razaqnahum yunfiqun * Walladhina yu’minuna bima onzila ilayka wama onzila min qablika wabil-akhirati hum yuqinun * Ola-ika `ala hudan minrabbihim wa ola-ika humu almuflihun

Alif, Lam, Mim. This is the Buk about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah. Who believe in the unsin, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them. And who believe in what has bin revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]. Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful. (Al-Baqarah 2:1-5)

Third

Wattab`u ma tatlu ash-shayatinu `ala mulki sulaymana wama kafara sulaymanu walakinna ashshayatina kafaru yu`allimuna an-nasa as-sihra wama onzila `ala almalakayni bibabila haruta wa maruta wama yu`allimani min ahadin hatta yaqula innama nahnufitnatun fala takfur fayat `llamuna minhuma ma yufarriquna bihi bayna almar’i wazawjihi wama hum bidarrina bihi min ahadin illa bi’idhni Allahi wayat `llamuna ma yadurruhum wala yanf`uhum walaqad `alimu lamani ishtarahu malahu fi al-akhirati min khalaqin walabi’sa masharaw bihi anfusahum law kanu y`Alamun

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah . And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew. (Al-Baqarah 2:102)

Fourth

Wa-ilahukum ilahun wahidun la ilaha illa huwa Ar-Rahmanu Ar-Rahim * Inna fi khalqi assamawati wal-ardi wakhtilafi allayli wan-nahari wal-fulki allati tajri fi albahri bima yanf`u an-nasa wama anzala Allahu mina as-sama’i min m`’in fa ahya bihi al-arda b`da mawtiha wabath-tha fihamin kulli dabbatin watasrifi arriyahi was-sahabi almusakh-khari bayna as-sama’I wal-ardi l’ayatin li qawmin y`qilun

And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Indid, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason. (Al-Baqarah 2:163-146)

Fifth

Allahu la ilaha illahuwa alhayyu alqayyumu la ta’khudhuhu sinatun wala nawmun lahu ma fi as-samawati wama fi al-ardi man dha alladhi yashf`u `indahu illa bi’idhnihi y`lamu ma bayna aydihim wama khalfahum wala yuhituna bishay’in min `ilmihi illa bima sha’a wasi`a kursiyyuhu as-samawati walarda wala yauduhu hifdhuhuma wahuwa  al`aliyyu al`adhim

Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor slip. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

Sixth

Amana arrasulu bima onzila ilayhi min rabbihi wal*mu’minuna kullun amana billahi wamala’ikatihi wakutubihi warusulihi la nufarriqu bayna ahadin min rusulihi waqalu sami`na wa`at`na ghufranaka rabbana wa’ilayka almasir * La yukallifu Allahu nafsan illa wus`aha laha ma kasabat wa`alayha ma iktasabat rabbana latu-akhithna in nasina aw akhta/narabbana wala tahmil `alayna isrankama hamaltahu `ala allathina minqablina rabbana wala tuhammilnama la taqata lana bihi w`Afu`anna waghfir lana warhamn`nta mawlana fansurna `al`lqawmi alkafirin

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His buks and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.” (Al-Baqarah 2:285-286)

Sixth

Shahida Allahu annahu la ilahailla huwa wal mala’ikatu wa ulul-`ilmi qa’iman bilqisti la ilaha illa huwa Al-`Azizu alhakim * Inna addina `inda Allahi Al-Islam wama ikhtalafa alladhina utu alkitaba illa min ba`di ma ja’ahum al-`ilmu baghyan baynahum waman yakfur bi’ayati Allahi fa’inna Allaha sari`u alhisab

Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge – [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them – out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah , then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account. (Aal `Imran 3:18-19)

Seventh

Inna rabbakumu Allahu alladhi khalaqa as-samawati wal-arda fi sittati ayyamin thumma istawa `al-l`arshi yughshi allayla an-nahara yatlubuhu hathithan wash-shamsa wal-qamara wan-nujuma musakh-kharatin bi’amrihi ala lahu alkhalqu wal-amru tabaraka Allahu rabbu al-`alamin * `Ud`u rabbakum tadarru`an wakhufyatan innahu la yuhibbu almu`tadin * Wala tufsidu fi al-ardi ba`da islahiha wad`uhu khawfan watama`an inna rahmata Allahi qaribun mina almuhsinin

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds. Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors. And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good. (Al-A`raf 7:54-56

Eighth

W`whayna ila musa `an alqi `asaka fa’idha hiya talqafu maya’fikun * Fawaqa`a alhaqqu wabatala ma kanu y`amalun * Faghulibu hunalika wanqalabu saghirin * Wa ulqiya as-saharatu sajidin * Qalu amanna birabbi al-`alamin * Rabbi musa waharun

And We inspired to Moses, “Throw your staff,” and at once it devoured what they were falsifying. So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing. And Pharaoh and his people were overcome right there and became debased. And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah ]. They said, “We have believed in the Lord of the worlds. The Lord of Moses and Aaron.” (Al-A`raf 7:117-122)

Ninth

Falamma alqaw qala musa ma ji’tum bihi as-sihru inna Allaha sayubtiluhu inna Allaha la yuslihu `amala almufsidin * Wayuhiqqu Allahu alhaqqa bikalimatihi walaw kariha almujrimun

And when they had thrown, Moses said, “What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters. And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it.” (Yunus 10:81-82)

Tenth

innama sana`u kaydu sahir wala yuflihu as-sahiru haythu ata

What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is.” (Ta-Ha 20:69)

Eleventh

Afahasibtum annama khalaqnakum `abathan wa an-nakum ilayna la turja`un * Fata`ala Allahu almaliku alhaqqu la ilaha illa huwa rabbu al-`arshi alkarim * Waman yad`u ma`a Allahi ilahan akhara la burhana lahu bihi fa-in-namahisabuhu `inda rabbihi innahu la yuflihu alkafirun * Waqul rabbi ighfir warham wa anta khayru ar-rahimin

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?” So exalted is Allah , the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne. And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof – then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed. And, [O Muhammad], say, “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.” (Al-Mu’minun 23:115-118)

Twelfth

By those [angels] lined up in rows. And those who drive [the clouds]. And those who recite the message. Indeed, your God is One. Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises. Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars. And as protection against every rebellious devil. [So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side. Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment. Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness]. (As-Saffat 37:1-10)

Thirteenth

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’an. And when they attended it, they said, “Listen quietly.” And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners. They said, “O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path. O our people, respond to the Messenger of Allah and believe in him; Allah will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment. But he who does not respond to the Caller of Allah will not cause failure [to Him] upon earth, and he will not have besides Him any protectors. Those are in manifest error.” (Al-Ahqaf 46:29-32)

Ya ma`shara aljinni wal-insi ini istata`tum an tanfudhu min aqtari as-samawati wal-ardi fanfudhu la tanfudhuna illa bisultan * Fabi ayyi alaa’i rabbikuma tukadh-dhiban * Yursalu `alaykuma shuwadhun min narin wanuhasun fala tantasiran * Fabi ayyi alaa’i rabbikuma tukadh-dhiban

O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah]. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? (Ar-Rahman 55:33-36)

Law anzalna hadha alqur’ana `ala jabalin lar`ytahu khashi`an mutasaddi`an min khashyati Allahi watilka al-amthalu nadribuha linnasi l`allahum yatafakkarun * Huwa Allahu alladhi la ilaha illa huwa `alimu alghaybi wash-shahadati huwa ar-rahmanu ar-rahim * Huwa Allahu alladhi la ilaha illa huwa almaliku alquddusu as-salamualmu almu’minu almuhayminu al`azizu aljabbaru almutakabbiru subhana Allahi `amma yushrikun * Huwa Allahu alkhaliqu albari’u almusawwiru lahu alasma’u  alhusna yusabbihu lahu ma fi as-samawati wal-ardi wahuwa al`azizu alhakim

If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah . And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought. He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Al-Hashr 59:21-24)
